002-USA TV more gay friendly

I found this article entitled as above very very interesting and enlightening. Therefore, I decided to use this topic as my post for the week. Just so you readers know, I picked out this article from The Star, 14th Nov 2010, Starmag section. Homosexuality has always been a taboo in our society especially in the Asian culture. It is considered an social illness and homosexuals are often shunned and ostracized. However, things are taking a 180 degrees turn and people especially the youths are becoming more open about homosexuality. How can I prove this? Well, the latest trend that the media and entertainment industry is picking up is a good example.

"The Good Wife" is getting a gay brother, the show "Hellcats" features a lesbian cheerleader and many more. The number of lesbians, bisexuals, gays and trans-gender characters on prime time US television is growing.

Second from left: Glee star Chris Colfer who plays a gay teenager
(Kurt) and he is also gay in real life

-"Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) president Jarrett Barrios said that the increase in gay and lesbian characters on TV reflects the shift in American culture towards greater awareness and understanding of our community"-excerpt of the The Star

The recent success of shows like Modern Family, Glee and Ugly Betty are obvious indicators that the audience are beginning to embrace homosexuality as something OK.

The bullock-cart days are over. We are living in the era where streets are adorned by Maseratis and Z4s. If we can advance in technology and science, why can't we advance our mentality and be open to change. Americans have open their arms to gays and lesbians and have began to treat them as an equal. Therefore, it is high time for us to come to terms with homosexuality for the better good.

Cheers!
